Rio: Where chaos meets beauty

When you first arrive, Rio hits you in the face. It is a mix of sensations. First, the brutal humidity. Intense traffic. The journey from the international airport to the city with its unmistakable stench of sewage as a stark reminder of the complexity that lies beneath Rio’s surface. Rio is complicated. Favelas nestled amidst fancy neighborhoods highlighting the social contrasts within the city.

Ibiza beyond summer

It has been a long European winter—the coldest in a few years. Add to that the second wave of a pandemic and a strict lockdown insisting on taking away much of the season’s joy. Then, the so expected spring doesn’t show. It’s already early April, I’m in south Germany, and the cold doesn’t let up. I wish for a dreamscape, ideally by the sound of waves, under sublime sunshine.

Kauai: the highs of a lush island

There had been heavy rain since we landed in Kauai, but now the clouds are slowly lifting. The sun insists on making its way through as I stop paddling for a few seconds to admire dramatic emerald mountains around Hanalei Bay – a long right-hand point break in the long stretch of beach where I am surfing – with views to cascading waterfalls.

Rajasthan on two wheels

I first traveled to India a few years ago. That was a short three-day trip, but long enough to give me a flavor of a compelling, out of the ordinary country. I watched the sunrise from the remarkable Taj Mahal, drove 300km from Agra to Ranthambore National Park on a Royal Enfield Bullet, and tracked wild tigers in their natural habitat. Rajasthan is a place that moved me. I fell in love with the culture, the land, the people, and have been going back ever since.
