Modest doors lead to magnificent homes with lush gardens, rooms hand-painted in a Venetian manner. The gorgeous main square, lined with restaurants and bars, is where everyone drifts towards once the heat of the day has mellowed. If you endure an 8-hour sail from Athens, Greece, to remote Patmos - one of the northernmost islands of the Dodecanese - you are likely to arrive at night. Your first sight will seem an impossibility - a circle of light floating several hundred feet above the sea. It is Chora, the island's capital, a citadel dominated by the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, and a #Unesco World Heritage Site. Chora sprawls over the summit of a hill from the grey fortress-monastery and is the backdrop to white, silent villages, framed by the Aegean's extraordinary blue. The bays and jagged promontories of Patmos, with their raw outcrops of reddish rock and olive green hills veined with snaking stone walls, so bare, for the most part, that it seems still untouched. In many ways, the #Seychelles are a unique part of the world. These are the oldest oceanic islands on Earth. With an outer halo of coral atolls, the islands at the heart of the archipelago are the world’s only mid-oceanic islands comprised of granitic rock, which blushes rose pink in the sun. Such distinctive geography has resulted in rich and unique biodiversity. Here we find ten times more giant tortoises than the Galapagos. There are species of animals and plants that evolved here and are found nowhere else – 80 endemic species of flora and invertebrates alone, contributing to over 2,000 endemic species of fauna.
